Echidna
Echidnas usually live in forests and meadows, often at high elevations.
The short-nosed echidna is found throughout Australia and on the nearby islands of Tasmania and New Guinea. The long-nosed echidna lives only on New Guinea.
Very few animals bother echidnas because of the spikes on their bodies. The short-nosed echidna remains fairly common in Australia. The long-nosed echidna, however, is an endangered species. It is hunted for food, and parts of its habitat have been cleared to create farmland. The echidnas and the platypus are the only living mammals that lay eggs.
